Topher Grace is an opium king in the Netflix trailer for The Waterfront

Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming drug-dealing family drama The Waterfront.
The Waterfront, the new Netflix series from Kevin Williamson (Scream, Dawson's Creek, The Vampire Diaries), is a dark family drama set in Havenport, North Carolina, that's like a mix of Ozark, Bloodline, and a dash of Virgin River. Although Netflix notes that the series is "inspired by true events," it turns out that the series is based largely on Williamson's own childhood memories of North Carolina—rather than a direct adaptation of a well-known true story.

The series centers on the powerful Buckley family, who have ruled the coastal town for generations—from fishing to restaurants. But their empire begins to crumble when family boss Harlan Buckley (played by Holt McCallany) suffers two heart attacks and is temporarily disabled. In his absence, his wife Belle (Maria Bello) and son Cane (Jake Weary) try to keep the family business afloat, leading to increasingly risky decisions.

When Harlan reenters the fray—despite his health—the situation escalates. Meanwhile, daughter Bree (Melissa Benoist), a recovering addict who has lost custody of her son, struggles with her past and a new, complicated relationship that will have major consequences for the family.

What begins as a family drama evolves into a crime thriller as the Buckleys become entangled in a large-scale opioid trafficking operation led by a mysterious figure named Grace. As their involvement increases, so do the violent confrontations — complete with fists, guns, and even sharks.

In addition to starring McCallany, Bello, Weary, and Benoist, the series also features series regulars Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, and Brady Hepner, and guest stars Topher Grace, Dave Annable, Michael Gaston, Gerardo Celasco, and Zach Roerig.

The eight-episode series premieres worldwide on Netflix on Thursday, June 19. With its combination of family drama, crime, addiction, and moral grays, The Waterfront promises to be an intense, gripping series—and one that clearly reflects Kevin Williamson’s Southern roots.
