The Wheel of Time Cancelled After Three Seasons by Prime Video

The Wheel of Time Cancelled After Three Seasons by Prime Video

Prime Video will not renew The Wheel of Time for a fourth season.
After three seasons, Prime Video has decided to cancel the fantasy series The Wheel of Time and not produce a fourth season. While the series has been praised creatively by both critics and Prime Video executives – with season three being the highest-rated season to date – ratings and especially the high production costs ultimately proved to be the deciding factors.

The Wheel of Time©Deadline - Prime Video

The series, based on the popular book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, had a promising start in 2021 with one of the most successful premieres on the platform. However, ratings declined in season three, with a short-lived presence in the Nielsen Top 10. The Wheel of Time disappeared from this list after only three weeks, while it remained in the list for the entire season of the previous two seasons. The series did return to number 10 in the Originals ranking after the season finale of the third season. The series remained quite popular worldwide, but this was not enough to justify the high costs of a new season.

The season three finale was deliberately made with a certain closure, in case the story ended there. Fans, who see season three as the creatively strongest part, will find the news disappointing. Prime Video will continue to promote the third season for the Emmy Awards.

The series was developed by showrunner Rafe Judkins, with Rosamund Pike as the lead actress and executive producer, among others.

I wouldn't say it's finished right away, which is a real shame.

Yes, I waited every year for the next season. I found the end of season 3 very open. Unbelievable! Every season got stronger and better… maybe another streaming service will continue?.

And The Rings of Power is constantly being renewed. Who still understands it?

These kinds of initiatives rarely have results. Well-known examples of positive results are the continuation of Star Trek TOS and The Expanse. I don't know of any more examples.

For the companies that make the series, it is simply a financial calculation. Will this give me what I expected? These companies generally do not care that people are upset that something is cancelled. What you do see happen is that another company takes it over. But this is a very expensive series, if you want to do it right, so that chance does not seem that high.

This series has/had everything in it, or at least should have, of epic quality and size. This is not a simple story, so you know (need to know) what you are getting into. In the end, a waste of money. More of a challenge for HBO Max!

Too bad The Wheel of Time was canceled after three seasons. Despite the strong reviews (even 97% on Rotten Tomatoes!) the viewing figures were ultimately not high enough to justify the high production costs. Apparently the restructuring within Amazon MGM Studios also plays a role.

If they had chosen for this after thr first season, I'd have understood.

Shame, it got better as time went along - but likely viewers decreased despite an increase in quality.
