The Blacklist - Pilot

What’s better than your first day at a new job? Having the concluding conversation to start the adoption procedure on the same day. It seems like nothing can spoil this day for Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone, ‘Law & Order: Los Angeles’). However, when the alarm doesn’t work and she almost oversleeps, it’s a clear sign that this day might not go as planned.

At the same moment Keen is hurrying to get to work on time, FBI’s most wanted Raymond Reddington (James Spader, ‘Boston Legal’) surrenders himself to the FBI. Red, Reddington’s pet name, offers his help in the search for a crime boss who’s just entered the country. However, if he’s going to help, he only wants to talk to Elizabeth.

The FBI-team led by Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhof, ‘Homeland’) and Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix, ‘Dollhouse’) have no choice but to agree to this demand and throw the FBI rookie in at the deep end. Elizabeth’s first day on the job is one normally only seen in films… She comes face to face with one of the most wanted criminals in the world, gets shot at during a chase and faces quite some surprises at home as the case becomes personal. Even though this is all a bit much, it does mean that this first episode is chock-full of action, leaving you constantly on the edge of your seat.

Red plays his own little game. He is a proper manipulator who can make everyone do what he wants them to do. He is a very intelligent man, who knows exactly how to get everything done. At the end of this pilot episode, it becomes clear that this is just the tip of the iceberg of what Red has in store. There seems to be no end to his so-called blacklist. People who know James Spader from ‘Boston Legal’ or ‘The Office’ might have to get used to seeing him as a criminal at first, but his performance is truly brilliant.

NBC already had a gem last season with the new series ‘Chicago Fire’, and as far as I’m concerned, they’ve hit the jackpot once again in the new series department. ‘The Blacklist’ has everything I'm looking for in a series. A strong storyline, good actors, enough action to keep me captivated and the occasional razorsharp and funny one-liner. There’s a reason why USA Today described ‘The Blacklist’ as the best new drama of this fall. It would be a safe bet to say that this show will get picked up for a second season.
