The Following - First Episode
The show that was already popular before the first episode had been broadcast and in which Kevin Bacon portrays the role of a former FBI-agent.
In this first episode, we see Joe Carroll (James Purefoy, Rome) breaking out of prison. Carroll was convicted in 2004 after he had killed 14 women, who all studied at the university where Carroll was teaching literature. FBI-agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) is the one who eventually caught Carroll and the FBI calls him in for his help with the investigation of the escape. One woman escaped Carroll when he was arrested, his last victim Sarah Fuller. Hardy even got stabbed in the heart during this rescue and now walks around with a pacemaker.
Hardy wrote a book about Carroll and when the FBI searches his cell, they find a note in the book Hardy wrote: “Dear Ryan, I enjoyed your book. Have you ever considered a sequel?” Carroll is determined to finish his work, but he’s not alone this time. In the past couple of years, he created a network of serial killers and minions that serve him. Even the neighbours of Sarah Fuller turn out to be someone other than you think they are.
I won’t tell more about the story, but I hope I have provoked some curiosity in you. I felt Kevin Bacon was magnificent in Footloose. More recently, he starred in X-Men: First Class. A big movie actor transferring to the small screen should say enough about the potential of the series. I have to say that The Following is indeed a good series and I will definitely watch the rest of the season. In addition, we have, of course, James Purefoy, who is excellently portraying a serial killer. He is able to effectively combine the passionate literature teacher and the cold-blooded killer in one character and let’s just say I wouldn’t fancy bumping into him in a dark alleyway.
The series is well-written and they have thoroughly thought of an elaborate storyline. I’m also pleased with the other actors and actresses in the series. I wonder what surprises the show has in store for us. Go and watch!
