The Fosters - Pilot

If there is someone who wants to make America a better country, that person is Jennifer Lopez, which shows in her latest project. She serves as producer of the newest TV series on ABC Family. A series that fits perfectly in the channel's existing timetable of series. The Fosters is about a lesbian couple that raises their family, consisting of one of the women's own son and foster children, together. It's an very current topic, since it was announced a few days ago that homosexual couples will get the same rights as heterosexual couples. As it should be! The message Jennifer Lopez wants to convey with this series is therefore pretty obvious. It shows that a gay couple is capable of raising a diverse family. The series also looks at the system children get stuck in when they can't stay with their parents anymore and the consequences of this system.

To be honest, I wasn't immediately interested in this series. It all seemed to lovey-dovey and I thought that 40 minutes were too long for a series that revolves around heartwarming messages. But since I rank ABC Family as one of the best channels, even though I think they are taking too long to make a decision about renewing 'The Lying Game', I had to know which new series they were going to air. The Fosters is one of them and that's why I decided to watch it.

As I said before, 'The Fosters' is about a diverse family. Meet the lesbian couple Lena, who is played by the wonderful actress Sherri Saum ('One Life to Live' and 'Gossip Girl'), and Stef (Teri Polo, 'Meet the Parents'). Lena is the heartwarming mother and the vice-principal of the children's high school. Stef is the somewhat stricter parent, which can be explained by her job, as she is a police officer. To make it a little bit more heartwarming, there's the issue of Lena's darker skincolor and the fact that Stef is a typical blond Caucasian female. Together they raise the rest of their family. This family consists of the biological son Stef, Brandon (David Lambert, 'Aaron Stone'). He is the result of Stef's previous relation with Mike Foster (Danny Nucci). The foster children are Jesus, played by Jake T. Austin ('Wizards of Waverly Place') and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez, 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager'). Although Jesus and Mariana are Spanish twins, they speak English fluently.

The pilot episode start with a scene in a juvenile hall for girls. In this scene, a girl is attacked by a group, because she is being released that day. Soon it becomes clear that Lena wants to take her up in her family.
This girl is Callie, portrayed convincingly by Maia Mitchell ('Mortified'). You'll notice how strong the bond is between Lena and Stef, since Lena adopts the girl without consulting Stef. Stef trusts Lena's judgement and choices, and accepts these. Callie is not the easiest girl to have around and as a viewer, you don't really know why she was in juvenile hall. Later is will become clear that at her last home, there was a foster dad that wasn't very nice, to put it subtly. He made sure Callie ended up in juvenile hall, however, her brother remained with the foster dad. The first episode focuses primarily on Callie, who wants to make sure her brother is removed from the foster dad's home. Aside from this story arc, there's Mariana's who meets with her biological mother, who's in need of money, and that of Brandon who plays the piano very well; so well that he can earn scholarships with it.

I have to say it's not my cup of tea, but I can certainly see why others would like the series. ABC Family found a worthy successor for 'The Secret Life', so I'm giving it a 7!
