The Goodwin Games - Seizoen 1

The Goodwin Games’ is one of those shows which was already dead on arrival. Already being cut from thirteen to seven episodes before it even aired and then put on as a midseason filler, the future is not looking good for this show. And that’s a real shame because ‘The Goodwin Games’ is actually quite a fun show. It tells the story of Henry, Chloe and Jimmy Goodwin, three siblings who return to their old hometown of Granby after the death of their father. At the reading of the will, it turns out that their father hasn’t simply left them his fortune of $23 million, but instead has created a long series of somewhat odd challenges, the Goodwin Games, which the three siblings have to play if they want to get their hands on the money.

The title of the show would suggest that the main focus of this show is the race for the money, but that’s not the case; the actual focus is on the characters themselves. A bit of caricatures in the first episode, Henry (played by Scott Foley), Chloe (Becki Newton) and Jimmy (T.J. Miller) soon start to develop as individuals; Henry starts to face his emotions, Chloe returns to college, and Jimmy reconnects with his daughter. Not only do they grow as individuals, they also grow stronger as a family. This is the real focus of the show. It teaches the importance of looking out for each other and how to be a family. And seeing these characters grow and bond is actually kind of heartwarming.

Now don’t worry, this show isn’t all about feelings and holding hands. It’s a comedy from the creators of ‘How I Met Your Mother’, and there’s a lot of humour and running jokes in the show. The main characters are all ridiculous in their own ways, and the other regular characters are a bit cuckoo too, in a good way. While the first episode is a bit slow-going, I really liked the development in the other six episodes and I would like to see a second season, if only to solve the mystery of Elijah (‘Who are you?’). The show has potential and, if given the chance, I think it could go for a long time. So if you find yourself bored one evening, just give it a go and let the Goodwin Games begin!
