Today the sun was showing off in a clear blue sky and pushing the mercury towards 25. Back in the day, when I was a little boy, I would probably have picked up a magnifying glass to burn some ants outside to the eternal hunting grounds. Nowadays I recreate a lot more innocently, but instead of being oiled up and parading through the surf of Bloemendaal in a bathing suit that is too small, I stayed inside and watched The Honorable Woman. In one go. Continuous. compulsively. It's 1:30 am now and I should have been drooling in my pillow dreaming about a young Vanessa Williams, but I couldn't go to sleep until I had written enthusiastic things about this British answer to Homeland. Well, the British answer to Homeland might also be a bit exaggerated, but damn what a great series. Nessa and her brother Ephra Stein run their late father's weapons factory. A Jewish father whose bombs were also regularly dumped in the densely populated areas of Gaza. In order to try to straighten out the family karma a bit, Nessa decides to contribute to the fraternization of Israel and Palestine. However, it soon becomes clear that running a business is different from the idealistic struggle for peace, love and understanding. That's 'peace', 'love' and 'understanding', but in English. I just speak. The Honorable is not an easy series. If you want to splurge on the couch with a bag of Buggles cheese dip from your belly button with some breezy viewing food in the background, this isn't it. Rather, it is a good bottle of wine that first has to breathe for a while before you can put it to your lips and knock back in one go. You definitely need an episode or three to get your ankles stuck in this visual quicksand. Hey, what a metaphor. If you make it up to episode four, then in addition to the already very pleasant acting and the extremely neat way of filming, you also get a story that transcends the script of many other series with childish ease. So. That's quite something to me.

It is because of Stephen Rea's great acting as Sir Hugh Hayden-Hoyle that I started looking for other series in which he plays. I liked The Shadow Line. And I can recommend it to anyone who also likes to watch The Honorable Woman .
