The Mindy Project - Season 1

I have a confession to make. Never did I ever deem it possible for me to watch a series that revolves around a gynaecologists’ office and actually liking it.

The Mindy Project’ is a series that follows a young Indian woman, Mindy Tahiri (portrayed by Mindy Kaling, better known for her role as Kelly Kapoor in ‘The Office US’), who works as an obstetrician/gynaecologist in a small practice (I guess this is a first). The story follows Mindy’s daily (and hilarious) struggles in her personal and professional life (as so far they are not influencing each other). As far as her personal life is concerned, Tahiri struggles a lot with dating (no seriously, her dating life is a bigger wreck than the Titanic and I just love watching a wreck happening), the fact that she’s not that young anymore, and that her best friend, Gwen Grandy (Anna Camp, ‘Pitch Perfect’ and ‘The Help’), is now a mother and that it’s not like the old days anymore.

In her professional life, she is joined by fellow colleague and awkward hottie, Danny Catellano (Chris Messina, ‘The Newsroom’ and ‘Argo’), who’s also an ob/gyn in the same practice, and the British guy with the big ego, Jeremy Reed (Ed Weeks, who played minor roles in various series). In the office, there’s an ever bigger bunch of slightly socially awkward and not-so-necessarily-sane people, namely Betsy Putch (Zoe Jarman, ‘Huge’), Morgan Tookers (Ike Barinholtz, ‘MADtv’), Shauna Dicanio (Amanda Setton, ‘Gossip Girl’), and Beverly with no apparent last name (Beth Grant, ‘King of the Hill’ and ‘Jericho’); they’re all helping to keep the practice up and running.

And a series wouldn’t be complete with a rivalling gynaecologist practice that operates from the same building with alternative methods. And the river of schadenfreude gets even better when Mindy develops a crush on one of the "rivals". And yes, all those names between hypotheses might seem familiar and that's because many of them have made appearances on 'The Office US'. To be honest, I've fallen in love with this show and Mindy Kaling really shows off her qualities as an actress and screenwriter (I'm seriously jealous of that woman; writing her own show and having the lead. She's the Indian-American version of Zooey Deschanel).

Some nice trivial facts: Her character is loosely based on her own mother, who was a obstetrician/gynaecologist physician herself, and, also, the humour shows this is truely one of Mindy Kaling’s creations. (No, really, if you like ‘The Office US’ you will love this show too considering the fact Mindy Kaling was the first female writer on the writing team there). Also, this show has been called “revolutionary” for it is the first American television series that has a South-Asian-American (such a mouthful) as the leading character.

To me, this series screams ‘Scrubs’ meets ‘The Office’ and I couldn’t love it more. After having finished the first series, I am thrilled with anticipation for the second season. I hope they continue on the strong note they ended the first season with. I give this show an 8.
