The Vampire Diaries - Season 2

The Vampire Diaries’. Whenever you ask people why they’ve started watching this series, they often answer ‘because of the good-looking people’. This is definitely a plus-point of the series, but season two proves that ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is much more than just a bunch of pretty faces. Season one ended with the shocking cliffhanger of Katherine’s return to Mystic Falls and season two continues on in a similar way with an enormous amount of exciting plot twists. Whilst the second season of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is mainly good fun and still contains plenty of tormented looks, the supernatural elements, suspense and good storylines ensure that the series has much more to offer than your typical teen drama.

Season two contains lots of supernatural mysteries which need to be solved. Bit by bit it’s revealed why Katherine has returned to Mystic Falls and what it really means for Elena to be her doppelgänger. The series also adds werewolves to the other supernatural inhabitants of Mystic Falls and we find out that there’s an ancient curse upon vampires and werewolves. The tension really goes through the roof once the original vampires come into play and from that moment on you don’t leave the edge of your seat.

Besides the supernatural mysteries, the characters still have to deal with plenty of personal problems. Of course there are the obligatory love affairs; the love triangle between Elena, Stefan and Damon is still going strong and the other characters are also dealing with their own relationship problems. Even though this is all very entertaining to watch, luckily the series also deals with family ties and being willing to do everything it takes to keep your family and loved ones safe. This ensures that the series is a lot less superficial than your everyday teen drama which mainly focuses on whether or not the cute guy is into you.

However, it does need to be pointed out that you sometimes have to take this series with a grain of salt. The plot twists might be exciting, but they follow each other in an unbelievably rapid succession and the speed and ease with which alliances are formed and broken is astonishing. It’s also amazing how easy it is to get away with murder in Mystic Falls. But then again, Stefan and Damon do have over a hundred years of experience with hiding bodies, so maybe this isn’t that unbelievable after all. What is unbelievable, however, is that Elena, Bonnie and Caroline haven’t received a visit from the truancy officer yet with the amount of classes they’ve missed. It’s not surprising then that Stefan is always surprised whenever Elena mentions that she really has to go to school again. Don’t worry Stefan, we’d long forgotten she’s actually a seventeen-year-old high school student as well.

Season two of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is suspenseful and entertaining. If you were left underwhelmed by the first season, I would still recommend you check out the second season. The main focus is really on the supernatural, making the season suspenseful and intriguing and the season finale promises that the third season will be even more suspenseful and intriguing. I would definitely recommend ‘The Vampire Diaries’, both to people who are looking for something with ‘good-looking people’ in it and to fans of supernatural dramas.
