'Walking Dead' spin-off series is officially in the works

Mere days after announcing a Breaking Bad spinoff, AMC has revealed that they are developing a companion series for its megahit The Walking Dead, set to premiere in 2015. Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert will serve as executive producers.

The new companion series, which like the flagship effort hails from AMC Studios, will tell a brand-new story and feature a new cast of characters and again be based on Kirkman's long-running comics.

"Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer," AMC president and GM Charlie Collier said. "We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse."

Season 4 of The Walking Dead premieres on AMC on Sunday, Oct. 13.
