The Walking Dead - Season 8

Which of you are still watching The Walking Dead? A positive answer seems much less likely in comparison to three years ago. As of the sixth season the ratings are down and commercially it's not performing as well. Even on myseries.tv people have stated that they have stopped watching The Walking Dead. I forced myself to keep watching. It took some effort, and yes, the eighth season isn't of the same quality as the first, fourth or fifth season, but it's not that bad.

After Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Supernatural) has had the entire seventh season to torment Rick (Andrew Lincoln, Teachers) and his group, it's now the time for Rick to strike back. He has declared war on Negan and starts with a ruthless attack against his headquarters. How and when the war will end isn't yet clear. What is clear is that there will be many casualties on both sides.

The situation around the show seems to have become a bit more stable.

The seventh season was mediocre at best, due to several reasons. During that specific season the creators of the show tried to put too much into it, but not with enough story alongside it. The show reached a new low. They were to ambitious, and because of that the lack in quality became way too obvious during several moments. In this season they seem to know how they want to progress the story. They've also become less ambitious, and because of that the show seems to have become a bit more stable. It's still not as good as some of the previous seasons, but the show isn't trying to reach that same level.

That there's a war and that the fighting has finally started, is a bit of a relief. After over a year of tension building, there's finally a bit of a climax. The pace of the show is a lot higher than before (most noticeable in the first couple of episodes), and that is an absolute breath of fresh air. A goal is set and because of that the writers have something to work towards. Other developments in the storyline are also a bit faster and that was something that was lacking in the previous season.

Nonetheless, the show still has its flaws.

Nonetheless, the show still has its flaws. There still isn't enough story to fill 16 episodes. This was clear during previous seasons and that hasn't changed. Instead of progressing the storyline and character development, you are told about the lives of secondary characters, whom viewers don't seem to care that much about. We see a person running from point A to point B, without it having any effect whatsoever.

Something I'm very conflicted about is the death of a major character in the middle of the season. It wasn't necessary, it's stupid, easily preventable and it completely destroys the storyline of the character. At first it seemed like the death only occurred to shock the viewer, but during the second half of the season it actually successfully progressed the storyline.

I'm still a huge fan of the comics this show is based upon and here this specific character is still alive. In fact, this person plays an extremely important part in the events that happen after the All-Out-War storyline (season 8). Again, this show proves that it's at its best when it follows the story of the comics. The first, fourth, thirteenth and final episode were direct translations of these comics and in my opinion they were also the best of the season. The writers will probably manage to think of something for next season's storyline, but I've got my doubts.

Despite the fact that the eighth season of The Walking Dead doesn't yet reach the same level of quality as previous seasons, it is an improvement over the previous and it feels more streamlined. Unfortunately, there are still some mistakes, which we already witnessed during previous seasons and that's a shame. As of currently, the show is already renewed and there will be a new showrunner. In my opinion this is a good thing, as a bit of fresh air will certainly do the show no harm. During the previous season, I had high hopes for the next, and I always ended up slightly disappointed. I am slightly concerned, but I can only hope that my hopes for a better upcoming season will end up being true.
