The walking Dead - Season 8

I have watched The Walking Dead since the first episode of season one. I have done this alongside many other Dutch people. There were times when I thought about stopping, as I thought it was becoming less exciting, but I always kept on watching. And then there was the eighth season of The Walking Dead.

After the end of the seventh season, the conflict between Rick (Andrew Lincoln, Teachers) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Supernatural) escalates. Both of them unleash everything necessary to create a war. The groups from Alexandria, The Kingdom & Hilltop take matters into their own hands and want to wipe out The Saviours (Negan's group). In this season zombies aren't that big of a deal anymore and it becomes clear that the ones to worry about are the living. After a mediocre, but deadly end of the seventh season, Rick and his group remember the fallen and are preparing to attack Negan and his Saviours. On the other side of the battlefield, Negan is also sick and tired of the constant tug-of-war and he wants to finally deal with Rick, with the help of his right-hand man Simon.

I think that over the course of the past few seasons The Walking Dead has become increasingly stale. In the eighth season there is so much attention going towards the war, that there is hardly any actual character development going on. In the previous seasons the writers focused a lot more on individual character development and in my personal opinion it was done a lot better. In this entire season all you see is several battles between groups. In previous seasons there wasn't (probably not enough) a whole lot of action going on, but in this season there was too much. I missed the storyline that makes The Walking Dead a good show. The creators have tried to put too much into one season, which has been at the expense of the quality. Besides that, there wasn't enough story to fill sixteen episodes. Instead of progressing the storyline and developing characters, we see small bits of the lives of lesser characters. This doesn't contribute to the main storyline.

Despite the fact that I really didn't like this season, I will still watch the next. This is because I hope that The Walking Dead will at some point return to the same quality it had before. Whether or not this'll actually happen, I'm not sure. The show just isn't that innovative anymore. A breath of fresh air will certainly do the show no harm. I am disappointed in this season and that's a pity. But I still have some hope for the next season.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
