Created by Robert Rodat and based on Daniel P. Mannix's non-fiction classic of the same name, the drama series is set in the corrupt world of spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition and explores a side of ancient Rome never before told - the sordid business of entertaining the masses, giving the mafia what they want most...blood and sport.
The series introduces an ensemble of characters from all corners of the Roman Empire who collide at the intersection of sports, politics and dynasties.
Emmerich and Marco Kreuzpaintner will each direct five episodes. The series was created by Robert Rodat, who also wrote five episodes.
