Time Bandits canceled by AppleTV+

Time Bandits canceled by AppleTV+

Time Bandits' latest adventure has come to an end. Apple TV+ has opted not to renew the series adaptation of Terry Gilliam's cult classic for a second season.
The news comes nearly a month after the 10-episode first season of the fantasy series starring Lisa Kudrow ended and was released in two-episode batches weekly.

The choice is not entirely surprising. Despite the nostalgia factor and mostly positive reviews (78% on Rotten Tomatoes), Time Bandits, created by Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris and Taika Waititi, failed to attract a large enough audience and failed to crack Nielsen's Top 10 streaming rankings.

After the first round of the streaming wars, where gaining market share was the only goal, streamers have taken a more disciplined approach in their shift to profitability, scrutinizing big-budget scripted series like Time Bandits.

The cancellation ends a long journey that began more than six years ago when Apple TV+ acquired the rights to the beloved 1981 film for a series adaptation produced by the now-defunct Paramount Television Studios, Anonymous Content's AC Studios and MRC .

In Time Bandits, Kevin (Kal-El Tuck), an 11-year-old history buff, finds a portal in his wardrobe and encounters the eponymous crew of expert thieves. Led by Kudrow's Penelope, the bandits embark on epic adventures as evil forces threaten their conquests and life as they know it. As the group travels through time and space, the gang encounters fascinating worlds from the distant past as they search for treasure, depending on Kevin to shed light on each situation.

The series also stars Tadhg Murphy, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva, Rune Temte, Charlyne Yi, Rachel House, Kiera Thompson, James Dryden, Felicity Ward, Francesca Mills and Imaan Hadchiti. Season 1 featured special guest appearances from Waititi and Clement.

The 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes surprises me. I expected much more than what was presented to us.

That 78% is the critics' score. They'll probably love the wonderful diversity and such.
But what I'm always more concerned with is the audience score, the popcorn meter. And that's at a meager 48% for this series...

There was a time when everything Taika Waititi touched turned to gold. His Thor films were well received and his "What we do in the Shadows" was also a huge comedy success.
Unfortunately, that seems to be going in the wrong direction now. This series is an example of that, but also "Our Flag Means Death" was canceled after season 2, which was really much less fun than the first season.

And Jemaine Clement, who brought us the fantastic "Reservation Dogs", also seems to be doing less well. In any case, his performance as Pure Evil was not really an acting milestone...

I sincerely hope that they will start making better, or at least more fun, things again.

Jermain Clement has nothing to do with Reservation Dogs. Taika Waititi was involved. Both are involved in what we do in the shadows.

Oops, I stand corrected... You're absolutely right. That was Sterlin Harjo with Waititi indeed.
