Tokyo Vice canceled by HBO Max after two seasons

Tokyo Vice canceled by HBO Max after two seasons

The HBO Max series Tokyo Vice has been canceled after two seasons.
The news was revealed during a Produced By panel at Fox Studios featuring HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey, Tokyo Vice creator J.T. Rogers and executive producer/director Alan Poul.

Tokyo Vice

Said a Max spokesperson in a statement in regards to the series farewell, “From Tokyo Vice’s richly written material to the gorgeously composed shots to the lived-in performances, the care and creativity of this enormously talented cast and crew shines in every frame of the show. We thank J.T., Alan, Ansel, Ken, Fifth Season, and Wowow for their partnership on this wholly unique modern noir thriller.”

Added Rogers and Poul, “Over the last five years Max has made sure we got to tell our story. They have supported us through thick and thin. Not only did they give us these two seasons, they said yes when we asked to end season one with a series of cliffhangers, and they said yes when we asked for two extra episodes so we could land the plane in the way J.T. had always envisioned.

We’re grateful not only to Max, but to our partners Fifth Season, who sold the show around the world, and made it a global success story. They were in the trenches with us always, guaranteeing that we could make the show we wanted to make. The response from both the press and from fans, in particular to Season 2, has been overwhelming. It’s been thrilling to find out how deeply viewers have engaged with our characters, and to hear how they are clamoring for more.

We know there is more story to tell. Of course, we'll see what the future holds, but we are indeed grateful to have been able to share this story so far on HBO Max.”

In Tokyo Vice, Ansel Elgort plays a Western journalist who works for a newspaper in Tokyo. He takes on one of the city's most powerful crime bosses.

Tokyo Vice first aired in 2022 and was originally shot during Covid. The delay between seasons was due to the ramping up of production in Japan per Poul and the larger order of ten episodes.

Aubrey said Tokyo Vice was one of the first series she bought for HBO Max. Rogers was friends with author Jake Adelstein. The two had met during their training as drivers. Adelstein, like Elgort, defeated the Yakuza as a journalist in Japan. Poul shared the challenges of filming in Japan, an experience that dates back to his days on the set of the 1980s Michael Douglas film Black Rain.

It's a shame that Tokyo Vice has been canceled by HBO Max, but I still hope that someone else will continue with this series in the future.

Good decision as far as I'm concerned. The story has been told. I thought it was very good, but I didn't see this as a series that you would have wanted to spread further. I think that would have detracted from the quality of the series.

I think there is still plenty to say. Came across the following news: The showrunners behind crime drama Tokyo Vice have revealed that the series may return for a third season, despite its recent cancellation by HBO Max.

What else is there to say then?

For example, Tokyo Noir – In and out of Japan's Underworld. This will be about Jake's perilous adventures since fleeing Goto. The book The Last Yakuza – Life and Death in The Japanese Underworld. Writing about the yakuza is always 'a challenge', the foreword states, and Goto also figures prominently in this. Goto, Buddha priest and ex-yakuza, is still secretly involved in the mafia, according to the FBI.

Could be, yes, could be... But I'm at peace with them not continuing this series. I liked it for what it was. Fortunately, there is still plenty to see 👍
