Tout va bien - Season 1

Admittedly, the French series Tout va bien does not yet have many viewers on MySeries and at first glance it is reminiscent of an average dramedy. But anyone who gives the series a chance will discover that it is actually an ingenious family drama.
In episode one, the hospital psychiatrist tells the grandfather, “When a child is sick, the whole family is sick.” His granddaughter Rose is recovering from a bone marrow transplant for leukemia. This sentence perfectly summarizes the essence of Tout va bien, a French dramedy series with unexpected depth. This series is also worthwhile for those who are not normally fans of this genre. Gradually you become involved with the many characters who all deal with the harsh reality of life in their own way.

The leading role is reserved for Claire. Claire is dealing with a host of problems, including family conflict and an impending marriage, with her partner's ex interfering with custody of her daughter, which isn't exactly easy.

To compensate for all this, Claire desperately cares for her sick niece, sometimes even more than her own sister Marion, the child's mother, who is quite confused. Out of desperation, Marion even starts a relationship with a clinic clown. The series quickly becomes much more than a typical soap opera, and you become attached to this special family.

Colorful parade of struggling family members

For example, Rose's grandmother is a writer of self-help books, from which the series takes its title. She speaks mainly in clichés and has an affair with her elderly publisher, who is accused of inappropriate intimacies with young writers from his stable.

Rose's uncle is an airline steward and has a phobia of hospitals, which is difficult because much of the series takes place in the children's hospital where his niece is in isolation.

The series talks a lot about little Rose's illness. This will be recognizable for many, educational for others. But more important than all the knowledge and facts is the influence that the disease has on all family members. As Rose becomes sicker, the other family members also become more uncertain in life. Panic, dissatisfaction, feelings of guilt and outbursts of anger increase. Claire is also in danger of getting stuck in her life.

Every family member deals with stress in their own way. Some deny the situation, others become obsessive about the facts and chances of survival, while still others see the disease as an opportunity to grow. All this is depicted in a very human and realistic way, partly thanks to the strong acting and the original script.

A lot happens in the series, both at Rose and beyond. Just like in real life, daily problems continue and may or may not become intertwined with the main issue. Occasionally large jumps in time are made, which is not always pleasant, but this does contribute to the watchability of the series.

The fact that the incident that starts the series (a flash-forward shrouded in mystery) does not return suggests that the makers are hoping for a sequel. But the series still ends nicely, so a new season may not be necessary. Still, many viewers will wonder what will happen next for this family, because they become attached to it. Who knows what the future will bring.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
