Back in 2014, the series premiered. The most recent season aired in 2019. So far, three seasons have released. All of those have been written by Nic Pizzolatto (The Killing). HBO is considering a return for True Detective in the shape of a fourth season, but without the direct involvement of Pizzolatto. The network is already talking to new writers.
Casey Bloys, chief content officer at HBO and HBO Max, revealed that it was hopeful of finding a new way into the story.
“It’s safe to say we’re working with a couple of writers to find the right tone and take. It’s definitely an area that could be very interesting and I think it would be interesting with a new voice. Quality is what’s going to guide us so if we end up with scripts that we don’t feel are representative or are not at a high enough quality, we’re not going to do something just to do it,” he said.
There are rumours of Lucia Puenzo (La jauría) and Sam Levinson (Euphoria) being part of the fourth season, but this hasn't been confirmed by HBO.
