True Detective - Season 3

Sometimes patience gets rewarded. Because of all the negative comments on the second season, it was uncertain if True Detective would get a third season. Fortunately for the fans, this season did come almost four years later. Everything that was wrong with the second season, the writers, actors, producers and directors managed to set right. Maybe too right, because even though the third season is of high-level quality, it feels a bit like a repeat of the first season.

In this third season, the story moved to Arkansas in 1980. Two children, a brother and a sister disappear without a trace. Detectives Wayne Hays (Mahershala Ali, The 4400) and Roland West (Stephen Dorff, Star) are assigned to the case and eventually find one of the children, dead. The other one still missing. What follows is a search for the truth that lasts for more than thirty years.

Fortunately, for this season the creators took more time to build a solid plot.

Season two just fell short, and that is why it fizzled out. The actors had no chemistry, the storyline had gaps, and the directing wasn't that great either. Because of all the high expectations after the first season, this second one was a significant disappointment. Fortunately, for this season, the creators took more time to build a solid plot.

The main attraction this season is probably Mahershala Ali.

The main attraction this season is probably Mahershala Ali. What an amazing actor. He can accurately portray a man who has to face problems because of his position. Season one and two feature a duo and a team respectively, but in this season it is mainly Ali who is in the spotlight, more than his co-star Stephen Dorff. So his character is overshadowed by Ali's character, but this is not a bad thing. It is clear that this is not Roland West's story. His purpose is to support the quest of Wayne Hays who more or less operates solo, and Roland West is excellent in this supporting role.

The rest of the execution is also more than fine. The story is excellent. Still, the mystery is secondary to the personal journey of Hays. That makes this season so captivating. The directing is also again very straightforward, although it isn't as consistent as in the first season. Nevertheless, the director makes excellent use of the cold and mountainous forests of Arkansas. The bleak surroundings fit the sombre themes perfectly in this season.

Although this season was a bit a copy of the first season, season three was once again of high-level quality. And the cast takes this series to an even higher level, especially Mahershala Ali. Furthermore, the storyline and themes are well thought out. A fourth season hasn't been announced yet, but when it does, I hope that Nic Pizzolatto takes the time to build another great story. I'm looking forward to more of the same level.
