The Thin Blue Line - Season 1 & 2
In the Swedish The Thin Blue Line (Tunna blå linjen) we follow a police team that struggles against the challenges of today.
What is particularly striking is the effective way of filming. The images in The Thin Blue Line are often jerky. For example, we regularly walk along with a character. This means that as a viewer you are involved in what is happening differently. This gives the series a kind of documentary feeling. This is also because the story is told in just as choppy a manner. That takes some getting used to in the beginning. Especially because sometimes you have the feeling that the scene is not completely finished. However, it works great. It therefore gives an excellent picture of what police officers have to deal with these days.
This is reinforced by the depiction of texts on social media in the series. It shows how unqualified responses from random people are. The common denominator already has an image without people taking note of what actually happened. Everyone has an opinion. The few who try to appear more nuanced are drowned out by the loudmouths and image makers. An annoying side effect for people on the front line. The Thin Blue Line shows what these types of messages do to people, what effect it has on personal lives and the work that has always been under a magnifying glass. This is reinforced because nowadays everything is filmed and then edited. Often to show only a specific part of the story. Everything is used to prove one's own right.
To properly portray this story, we follow a team of police officers for two seasons. We get to see the joys and sorrows of the various main characters. During work, but certainly also in private life. It provides an insight into a turbulent world. Actions at work have repercussions on private life. While one agent tries to find (new) love, the other becomes depressed by her situation. Always positive outwardly, but the internal struggle has an impact on her state of mind. Especially when she is alone. The vast majority of the team tries to live life as normally as possible. Unfortunately, some of them are unable to do this. It creates broken and volatile relationships.
The Thin Blue Line has a unique approach, especially when it comes to the imagery and the way the story is told. It fits the subject perfectly; the work of the police. Although I am generally positive about this series, there are also some negatives. The most important thing is that everyone seems to have a relationship with everyone within the force. I wonder how realistic that is. The fact remains, however, that for two seasons you can enjoy a series that shows the not so nice sides of our society - without condemning them. However, The Thin Blue Line does show from the perspective of the police the difficulties they face. This is (rightly) a hit because the third season has already been announced.
