Twilight of the Gods - First episode

Twilight Of The Gods is a bloody animated series based on Norse mythology, created by Zack Snyder (Late Show with Stephen Colbert) and Jay Oliva (Young Justice).
In this first episode, we are drawn into a fierce battle from the very beginning in which King Leif (Stuart Martin, Jamestown) bravely but laboriously resists an enemy army. Just when he thinks he is about to die, he is saved by a red-haired woman named Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks, Overspel) who, in addition to being stunningly beautiful, is also a good swordsman. After they emerge from the battle together unscathed, they decide to live life as king and queen.

This first episode makes it clear that this is a series for adults. There is already more than enough blood and severed heads in this episode. If that isn't enough, an erotic scene unfolds in between that leaves little to the imagination. We are of course not complaining, but the average viewer has been warned.

Anyway, what about the story itself? And the characters? First and foremost, the whole thing looks pretty good. The unique animation creates a captivating world that immerses you in ancient Norway. The story itself looks refreshing, but is less effective due to the weak dialogues.

The rich mythology is well depicted, but the characters often react in a cliché and superficial way, which means that, especially with the main characters, you don't get the feeling that they have a sufficiently pronounced personality. The faces often don't show much emotion due to the typical animation.

The action, on the other hand, does not disappoint. Especially with Zack Snyder (director of the legendary war film 300) at the helm, you know what to expect. Once the action starts, it goes all out and, as mentioned above, it absolutely does not shy away from blood, guts and so on. So get ready for gallons of red tones that will drip off your screen.

For the first episode we can already say that the makers have opted more for a visual spectacle. The story itself, on the other hand, occasionally rambles as if it is difficult to wait until the next sensational moment.

The end of this episode, on the other hand, does leave a fascinating cliffhanger. So we can say that this one was more of an introduction to the real story. It's a pity that all this felt a bit rushed and most of the characters came out quite one-sided.

So it's a bit of a 'mixed bag' if we can call it that. For fans of 'over the top' action and violence, this is a must see. But how the rest will unfold in terms of compelling plot and characters remains to be seen.
