Twisted (2013) - Pilot

The ABC Family, birth-mother of incredibly popular shows as 'Pretty Little Liars' and 'The Lying Game', comes with a brand new mysterious drama: 'Twisted'. The first episode aired right after the season finale of 'Pretty Little Liars' on March 19th and will fully premiere synchronous with the fourth season of 'Pretty Little Liars'.

'Twisted' starts with a scene where two girlfriends (barely teenagers) are swinging. They are having the time of their lives, until an eleven-year old boy walks up to them. The boy looks confused and keeps repeating that "He had to do it". The camera closes in on a jumping rope the boy holds and the show fastforwards five years into the future.

As a viewer, you are now in the home of the family of Jo (Maddie Hasson, known from 'The Finder'); one of the two girls from the opening scene. She, now a true teenager, is watching the telly with her parents. There's an item on the news about Danny Desal (Avan Jogia, main character on 'Victorious') who is released from prison after a five-year sentence for strangling his aunt. Automaticly a link is established with the flashback in the beginning.

Danny returns to society and, therefore, to high school. However, the students are far from happy to have this 'socio' in their class. Danny wants to rebuild the friendship with Jo and Lacey (Kylie Bunbury, played in 'The Sitter') but the two girls haven't been friends after the incident. Lacey is now a popular girl with a close group of friends and a gorgeous boyfriend. Jo, on the other hand, has become a misfit. On top of that, her father is the sheriff, bringing her in an even more uncomfortable situation. The moment Danny walks into the school, Lacey starts speaking to Jo and they can't avoid Danny for very long. Not for the least of reasons that they still have lots of questions. Fairly quickly contact is reestablished between the three, but Jo and Lacey are, of course, still a bit reserved.

On the first day of his return, Danny is invited to a party in Regina's house, Lacey's best friend. Danny and Jo both go to the party, but as soon as Jo gets drunk he brings her home with the help of Lacey. Regina has taken a liking to Danny and tries to lure him into bed using texts. However, Danny isn't interested and reminisces the rest of the night with Lacey. The next morning Lacey wakes up in Danny's room and another news item is on tv. Regina has been found dead in her home and there's no trace of the killer. It is no surprise who suspect number one is.

The pilot leaves the audience in a state of confusion, because uncountable questions have been raised. Did Danny really commit a second murder? Why didn't he reveal the reasons for killing his aunt? There are also some details about Danny's parents, but it is all rather vague. Personally, I think this episode's biggest question is why Regina and Danny's aunt wore the same necklace.

In short, the show is all about life on a high school and all the mysterious events in and around the city. I have to admit that I like series which leave the viewers confused (like Lost) and I'm curious how the story will develop. Though, only one episode has aired as of yet, so I can't really predict whether this will be a hit serie. But the pilot was promising.
