In Unorthodox, Esther Shapiro (Shira Haas, The Conductor) is the main focus. When Esther is married off to a man she doesn't know, she tries to get out of her extremely religious community. She succeeds and she ends up in Berlin, where she tries to rebuild her life. She dreams of a career as a musician, but her past continues to haunt her.
The series is based on the life of the Jewish Deborah Feldman, who grew up in a highly orthodox New York community. She fled the community and left for Berlin to build a new life there. She wrote a book about this. This book has been used as a guideline for the new Netflix mini-series, which will be released on Netflix on March 26.
