Long-running ITV drama series Vera is ending after fourteen seasons

One of ITV's longest running drama series is coming to an end after fourteen seasons. The detective series Vera starring Brenda Blethyn will end at the end of the next season, the leading actress announced. The series, produced by Silverprint Pictures, returns for a fourteenth and final series in the form of two 120-minute episodes filming this summer.



Two-time Oscar nominee Blethyn has been playing the lead role in Vera for more than ten years. She stars as the retired detective based on the novels by Ann Cleeves. Vera plods along in a disheveled state, but has a calculating mind and despite her volatile personality, she cares deeply about her work and colleagues. The series airs in the US on BritBox.

Vera has more than fifty episodes and tends to broadcast her seasons in short series that are watched by millions per episode.

Blethyn, who received Oscar nominations for Mark Herman's Little Voice and Mike Leigh's Secrets & Lies, won the Rose d'Or Lifetime Achievement Award for her portrayal of the detective in 2021.

“Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I’m sad to be saying ‘cheerio’,” she said. “But I am so proud of our achievements over the last 14 years. I’ll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role.”
