The potential prequel, currently in development, explores Sarah and Everett's story. The upcoming season six will take a look at the duo's past, with young Everett and Sarah in flashbacks.
The search is on for actors to play the characters as guest stars in season six of Virgin River. If successful, they would star in a Sarah and Everett spin-off, which is in development being written by Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith.
Netflix took a similar route with another romantic drama, Bridgerton, and successfully expanded the universe with the prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which became one of the streamer's most-watched series.
During an interview with Deadline about the Christmas special that concluded season five, Smith, who joined the series after season four, hinted that we would learn more about Sarah and Everett's romance next season.
“What we’re exploring more in Season 6 is who Everett Reid is, what his backstory is, what his connection to Virgin River was when he met her mom and then also what it is today,” he said, adding that Season 6 will explore the “relationship of Everett with the town as well as Everett and Mel.”
John Allen Nelson, who was introduced in the Christmas special, plays Everett in the present. Sarah hasn't been seen in the series yet, at least not in a meaningful way.
In a cliffhanger of the first part of season five finale, Mel's sister Joey discovered a man's love letters to their mother that revealed him to be Mel's biological father. In the Christmas special, Mel and Jack began a search for the mysterious man that eventually led them to Everett Reid. At first he wanted nothing to do with Mel, but towards the end of the special, in true Christmas spirit, he came around and asked to be part of her life.
