Virgin River scores early renewal with season seven on Netflix

Virgin River scores early renewal with season seven on Netflix

The sixth season of the drama, starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson, airs in December.
In the run-up to the sixth season of Virgin River, the drama has already scored a renewal at Netflix.

The cast announced on Instagram on Wednesday that the series has been renewed for season seven, which will consist of ten episodes. Patrick Sean Smith will also return as showrunner and executive producer.

Based on the book series of the same name by author Robyn Carr, Virgin River follows nurse Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) who moves from Los Angeles to a remote town in Northern California in search of a fresh start. But she soon learns that small-town life isn't as easy as she expected and that she must first heal herself before Virgin River can truly become her home.

The renewal places Virgin River in a very select club of original Netflix series that have run (or will run) for at least seven seasons. Of the streamer's dozens of adult-oriented scripts, only Orange Is the New Black, Grace and Frankie and animated series Big Mouth have lasted that long.

The series returns to Netflix with season six on Thursday, December 19. The cast also includes Martin Henderson, Tim Matheson, Annette O'Toole, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Zibby Allen, Sarah Dugdale, Marco Grazzini, Kai Bradbury, Kandyse McClure and Mark Ghanime.

Last week, Netflix dropped a teaser for the upcoming season, which hinted at a busy wedding season for Mel and Jack (Henderson). “Against the backdrop of Mel and Jack’s romantic spring wedding season, this sixth installment promises fresh twists and turns, escalating love triangles, delightful wedding drama, as well as uncovered secrets from Mel’s father’s past which will transport us to the magic and mystique of Virgin River in the 1970s,” the season six logline reads.

Sue Tenney, Amy Palmer Robertson, Roma Roth, Christopher E. Perry, Robyn Carr, Erin Cardillo and Richard Keith also executive produce.
