Set in the late 1800s, the story follows Abby Walker (McNamara), a wealthy and tough Boston woman whose husband is murdered in front of her on their journey west. After crossing paths with Calian (Cortez), a curious Apache tracker, Abby arrives in the small town of Independence, Texas. There she meets eclectic residents who are fleeing their past, chasing their dreams and keeping their own secrets.
Abby also literally bumps into Hoyt Rawlins (Barr), a slick rogue, thief and con artist with a dented heart of gold, who quickly sees Abby as a target until she turns the tables on her. Abby and Hoyt soon find themselves on the same page as they both want to uncover the truth about the identity of Abby's husband's killer. They also vow to save Independence, a frontier town where nothing is what it seems.
The first season of Walker Independence, which aired on Thursday nights, averaged 0.05 in the 18-49 demographic and 497,000 viewers in live+same-day ratings (including DVR playback until 3 a.m.). It was one of the network's better-performing scripted series this season. In the live+7 days ratings, the series gained 90% more viewers.
It's no surprise that the series has been canceled since Nexstar, the company that now runs the network, wants to focus on airing low-cost programming such as unscripted series and purchased scripted series. Only two of The CW's current original series have been renewed for 2023-24 - All American (2018) and Walker and most of the remaining series are expected to be canceled shortly.
