Mae Martin, who also created the series, told Netflix's Tudum that their own childhoods were a key inspiration: "I've often written about the aftermath of adolescence, but I always wanted to directly explore that period, with all its raw and intense emotions. I was a 'wayward teen' myself in the early 2000s. My best friend was sent to one of those so-called institutions for troubled youth when she was sixteen. She came back with the most bizarre stories."
Wayward is a genre-bending limited series that promises to offer a deep, thrilling, and emotionally charged look at growing up, resistance, and the struggle to find your own truth—in a world that prefers to keep that truth hidden.
