We Are Men - Pilot
'We Are Men' is but one of the many new sitcoms which will premiere this autumn. Like other sitcoms like 'Back in the Game', 'The Goldbergs', 'Trophy Wife' and 'Welcome to the Family', all episodes are 20 minutes. Also, like the other shows, the pilot of 'We Are Men' is available online before its official premiere. CBS is releasing four new sitcoms this autumn, but the questions remains whether 'We Are Men' will be voted as the best. I must admit I highly doubt it.
'We Are Men' shows us the life of Carter (Chris Smith, 'Mayne Street'). When we are introduced to him and his life, he is about to get married. Until suddenly another guy stirs up a fuss by storming into Carter’s life, claiming he still loves Sara and will never stop loving her. The title of the series already suggests that Sara will leave Carter at the altar, and it therefore comes as no surprise that Carter is soon living in a fully furnished apartment. However, Carter thinks that this is a last resort for divorced men: dumped, pathetic and totally incapable of buying their own furniture.
While he lives there, he befriends Gil (Kal Penn, 'House'), Frank (Tony Shalhoub, 'Monk') and Stuart (Jerry O’Connell, 'Burning Love'), who take on Carter as a special project to make him more suitable for the life of a bachelor. Although these three friends are portrayed by experienced comedians, the gags do not always work, and the sense of humour lacks consistency throughout the pilot. If you are looking for a series where you have to think a lot, or where you have to watch an episode a couple of times in order to fully understand the jokes, you should definitely not watch 'We Are Men'.
Frank Russo is a successful middle-aged clothing manufacturer. After he divorced his first wife, he married Lauren. Followed by Stacey, and later on Jessica. Currently he is a bachelor notorious for his passion for young women. Gil Bartis, another friend of Carter’s, was having the world’s worst affair. I, and probably many others watching the series, will at first think it is his wife he is in bed with. Finally there is Stuart Weber, a gynaecologist who divorced a top-class lawyer. Sadly for him, he is currently breaking up with his second wife, who hired his ex as a lawyer.
Although some of the running gags are really good and funny, the writers should put more effort in the following episodes. 'We Are Men' is not a bad series per se, and one of the strongest aspects of the show is the vast amount of good actors. However, compared to other shows like 'Trophy Wife' and 'Welcome to the Family', 'We Are Men' is clearly not of the same level. I also think other CBS programmes will be better than this one. The series will probably not be a hit, but not a complete flop either. This is why 'We Are Men' scores a seven out of ten. Let’s see if the next couple of episodes will turn out to be better than the pilot.
