Summer start date for fifth season of What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows sets a season five start date on FX that almost exactly coincides with the start of the fourth season in 2022.
What We Do in the Shadows season five returns this summer. The long-running FX series is set in the universe of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement's 2014 mockumentary of the same name.

It follows Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Laszlo (Matt Berry), three self-obsessed vampires living in Staten Island with Nandor's downtrodden confidant Guillermo (Harvey Guillén).

What We Do in the Shadows

According to Collider, FX has now set a start date for the fifth season of What We Do in the Shadows. The season kicks off on the network on Thursday, July 13. This date is exactly one year and one day later than the start of the fourth season in 2022.

It's quite an achievement that a series this crazy and unconventional has become so popular and has been running for so many seasons. While the cast of What We Do in the Shadows includes many exciting cameos, it was also not full of household names at the time of its 2019 premiere. The chances for a hit were against the series in terms of production and planning over the years but it is still a success.

Like many series that premiered in 2019, What We Do in the Shadows suffered production shutdowns at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. However, season two was already completed and managed to air in April 2020. The next season came out 13 months later, an unusually tight turnaround for a pandemic-era series thanks to scheduling confluence. That production schedule is something that also contributed to the fact that the series will still be broadcast in its fifth season this year amid the Hollywood writers' strike.

What We Do in the Shadows' consistent release schedule is the result of sheer luck. However, the longevity is not. The series is almost universally loved, with a 98 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, beating even the original film's Certified Fresh score of 96. The series has become a hit thanks to its indelible characters and expert mix of comedy and horror, and its ability to hold a consistent schedule against the odds is just the icing on the cake.

Very enjoyable series and indeed, not a series that you expect to last (at least) five seasons. But luckily he does! :-)
