For Ellis, that means hard police work; for Max, it means accents, disguises, schemes, and generally making friends with everyone she sees while driving Ellis crazy.
"They're each other's yin and yang," says director James Genn in an interview. "It's just really fun seeing these two go and bust bad guys together because they're going out in the world and doing things with each other that they couldn't ordinarily do on their own."
The series is loosely inspired by the classic 1982 film 48 Hours, which saw a renegade cop team up with a robber to take on the bad guys. Each episode is also inspired by a different iconic film or television series.
Max and Ellis come from very different worlds. Can they ever fully trust each other? And will their sizzling on-screen chemistry ignite into something deeper? You’ll have to watch to find out.
At the end of the first season, in a thrilling cliffhanger, Ellis is about to arrest Max for stealing a $33 million jewel. He is deeply betrayed by her triple role in the heist when she makes a revelation: she has discovered the identity of his brother's killer.
When the police commissioner makes an unexpected career announcement, she reassigns Ellis and Max to work together to take down a network of fast-moving robbers. Both must deal with their strained relationship on the job. But Ellis is wary, can he ever trust Max again?
Max assures her con-artist father George (Jason Priestly) that she’s still a con artist who hasn’t gone over to the dark side… and hints that she’s up to something big.
Max moves into a new house (with Ricky as a roommate, of course), someone from her past comes to visit, and she takes a huge personal risk for Captain Li. Ellis is impressed, and their relationship deepens as he gets closer to finding his brother’s killer.
As Max deepens her bond with her team and Ellis, she’s faced with a difficult choice: Which family feels more like home?
