Trailer for Yellowstone (2018) season 5B ushers in civil war for the Dutton family

Bittered brother and sister Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bentley) face off in the trailer for Yellowstone (2018) Season 5B.
The civil war within the Dutton family in Yellowstone (2018) erupts into open war in the official trailer for the second half of season five.

“I can’t do this anymore,” anxious cattle rancher’s daughter Beth Dutton, played by Kelly Reilly, says at one point in the trailer. “Well, you’re gonna have to, honey. Or we’re gonna lose this place,” her ranch hand husband, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), warns her as the Paramount Network drama makes its long-awaiting return after the first five episodes of season five ended back in January 2023.

“This war is just beginning,” says Kevin Costner, who is not returning after his high-profile exit from the Yellowstone ranch as John Dutton, and yet appears very much in the trailer in scenes likely to wrap his character. In a major cast disruption, Costner left the show after the fifth season hiatus for Yellowstone, partly to focus on his Horizon film saga.

Facing off against Beth Dutton is Jamie Dutton, played by Wes Bentley, who follows uneasily in his patriarch father’s steps and warns his sister as he throws down the gauntlet to her: “You destroy me, you destroy yourself.”

There’s a lot to play for. “Old lions die in the jaws of younger lions. And you are the younger lion,” Dawn Olivieri, who plays fixer Sarah Atwood, Jamie Dutton’s love interest, warns him.

Yellowstone (2018) tells the story of the Dutton family, who own the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. Within the embittered Dutton family, shifting alliances, unsolved murders and open wounds lead to bitter confrontations, while Montana ranchers are threatened by a growing city, an Indian reservation and America's first national park.

The series from co-creators Taylor Sheridan and John Linson returns on Sunday, November 10. Season 5B episodes air at 8 p.m. on Paramount Network, with an encore two hours later on CBS. The second half of the fifth season can be seen on SkyShowtime from Thursday, November 14.

The return of Yellowstone (2018) in season five, without Costner, is so mysterious that even the cast doesn't know how it will all end. The last half of the season came with edited scripts so that the actors knew only their own lines, which in some cases prompted reactions in real time.

Reilly and Hauser - who play Beth and Rip - are also in talks to star in a possible sixth season of Yellowstone (2018), after season 5B was announced as the final season. Paramount Network has not yet commented on the status of more Yellowstone (2018), or on a total episode count of 5B.

A possible sequel would be different from Yellowstone's (2018) follow-up series, The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Fox, and Patrick J. Adams, one of several in-universe spinoffs.

Yellowstone (2018) is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios and co-created by executive producers Sheridan and John Linson. Costner remains executive producer, along with Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari, Stephen Kay, Michael Friedman, Voros and Keith Cox. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
