Netflix's sci-fi epic 3 Body Problem gets a healthy dose of familiar faces in its second season, with a notable return for Game of Thrones veterans.3 Body Problems—based on the trilogy of the same name by Chinese author Cixin Liu—is being developed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, along with Alexander Woo. Following the global success of the first season, the series will return for a second and third season, which will conclude the entire story.
The production has announced that Alfie Allen (pictured), known as Theon Greyjoy from Game of Thrones, will have a recurring role in season two of Body Problem. He will be joined by David Yip (Fortitude) and child actor Jordan Sunshine. Previously announced new cast members include Claudia Doumit (The Boys) and Ellie de Lange (The Tattooist of Auschwitz).
Filming for season two recently began in Budapest, Hungary. The official description remains mysterious: "As the alien invasion approaches, humanity prepares—on Earth and elsewhere."
This continuation of the story will feature a significant time jump from the first season, with the following cast members reprising their roles: Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, Eiza González, Jovan Adepo, Saamer Usmani, Liam Cunningham (also known as Davos Seaworth on Game of Thrones), Marlo Kelly, Sea Shimooka, and Josh Brener.
The direction is once again provided by top names from the Thrones universe: Miguel Sapochnik (known for, among other things, the episode "Battle of the Bastards") directs several episodes and serves as executive producer. Jeremy Podeswa, who was also involved in the first season, returns.
The series is based on Liu's influential trilogy, which begins with The Three-Body Problem and culminates in epic, large-scale stories of human contact with extraterrestrial intelligence spanning multiple eras.
Benioff has already hinted that season two will be "much better" than the first, as the story expands dramatically: "The second book is much better than the first, and the third book completely blew me away. It gets more ambitious as it goes along. Book two takes a huge leap, and so do we."
There's no official release date yet, but given the current production status, a 2026 return seems most likely.
