Alice in Borderland (2020) has become one of Netflix's most successful Japanese original series, with season two even reaching No. 1 on the streamer's Global Top 10 list for non-English language television series in 2022.
At the same time as the announcement of the start date, the first teaser was also revealed, giving fans a taste of the new, nerve-wracking season.
Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya return in their lead roles as Arisu and Usagi. At the start of the new season, they seem to be living a peaceful, married life. However, their happiness is abruptly interrupted by terrifying visions and a mysterious disappearance, forcing them to once again enter the deadly Borderland. Hayato Isomura, Ayaka Miyoshi and Katsuya Maiguma also return in their familiar roles.
The third season also introduces a host of new characters, including Koji Ohkura, Risa Sudou, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Tina Tamashiro, Kotaro Daigo, and Hyunri. Kento Kaku, known for House of Ninjas and Like a Dragon: Yakuza, plays Ryuji — a man who researches the afterlife and guides Usagi on her return to the deadly game world.
Alice in Borderland (2020) is now considered a flagship within Netflix's Japanese strategy. The series not only offers spectacular action scenes and tension, but also philosophical layers, with which it has built a growing global fan base. Netflix has been investing increasingly in Japanese live-action productions in recent years, in order to respond to both the increasing domestic demand and the growing international interest in Japanese pop culture.
Earlier this year, Netflix enjoyed success with Bullet Train Explosion, an explosive action reboot directed by Shinji Higuchi (Shin Godzilla). There’s also a lot of interest in the upcoming series Last Samurai Standing, a bloody battle-royale drama set to debut in November. Starring Junichi Okada, the series follows nearly 300 samurai as they engage in a deadly battle for survival during the Meiji period. Other recent Japanese hits on Netflix include the supernatural action series Yu Yu Hakusho and the ninja family series House of Ninjas, both of which charted in the non-English Top 10 worldwide.
Alice in Borderland (2020) season three will be available to stream on Netflix from Thursday, September 25.
