After the 10 seasons of the American series "Alone", I was curious about the Australian version. Of course, this is my opinion, so don't be influenced by what I say. The prize money for the winner here is $250,000 instead of $500,000 (and probably even less, because I think it concerns Australian dollars, in which case you only win about $165,000 American dollars). Furthermore, from the very first moment I wondered what decision was made to choose these 10 people for the program. The majority of the participants had no business being there. Also, I've never seen such a depressing location before... Tasmania's West coast. The better candidates did their best to make something of it, but actually finding food was certainly disappointing. A second season will start soon in New Zealand... I'm curious whether lessons have been learned from the somewhat poor direction of season 1.

You're just busy anymore, Klaas :-) Nice to read those pieces. Gives a little insight into what these types of series are all about. Tasmania is indeed a very beautiful island to visit. But in motels with a bar :-D

Tasmania is also very beautiful, but I found this location terrible... it reminded me of those places along the rivers in Vietnam during the war, where the severed heads of American soldiers were impaled on those protruding trunks above the water.

After the first season there was also a 2nd season. I found the previous location in Tasmania very disappointing. So I hoped, if there was a sequel, it would be somewhere else. And yes, it could hardly have been better. Aotearoa on the South Island of New Zealand. Until about 5 years ago I always had the desire to travel to New Zealand and then with a one-way ticket, no way back. I'm 60 now and it never happened and it won't happen again. But what an amazing, beautiful location here. Something started to tickle me. I could have tried to participate in this program myself, but I don't like fish and the saying "Hunger makes raw beans sweet" doesn't exist for me. This time too, the 10 participants had to do nothing but be the last to persevere. The first dropouts were those people who on the first day acted cool about how many years they had lived this kind of life, ex-military, cops, survival guides and so on. You don't want to know how many skills they didn't have and that it would be a piece of cake to win. After a few days they did nothing but whine and make excuses. Actually exactly the same as the "Alone USA" participants. I've seen so many of these survival shows and it's the same everywhere. But luckily things got interesting at a certain point when the better ones remained. You actually see that it is becoming more and more a psychological thing. The daily urge to find food makes everything increasingly difficult, because there is no guarantee that you will find food every day (or week). The last 6 contestants made it through this season. The mistakes of the first season were no longer there. Still enjoyed it again. And now we just have to wait and see if there will be another season 3.

Season 3, back to the depressing West Coast of Tasmania. If I'm completely honest, I'm getting a bit tired of this Australian version of Alone. The last 3 candidates did well, but this location just has nothing to offer... little to eat, no wild animals that could possibly provide some excitement, bleak area and even the participants don't know how to fill their time with videos, in which they have nothing new to tell, only their aches, pains and difficult moments in their past. If there is a sequel, I will certainly still watch, but I'm not looking forward to it anymore. A tip for the fans, soon another season of the American version of Alone. And this time no cold in which you have to survive, but now they have to survive in the heat of a desert in South Africa. Seems like a nice, new challenge.
