This is America... 1857. Up is down, pain is everywhere, innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace - even fewer know compassion. There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival.

The first episode was very dark and reminded me here and there of The Revenant (feature film with Leonardo di Caprio). You have to bite through that sour apple, after that the miniseries becomes less apocalyptic and much more beautiful. Well acted, beautifully portrayed and raw realistic as I like to see in a historical series. The soundtrack is also very good. Exciting!
American Primeval, created and written by Mark L. Smith, who is also known for his work on The Revenant. It's gripping, very violent and grim, from beginning to end. I enjoyed the storyline, the stunning cinematography with attention to the smallest details, the beautiful landscape and also the great acting. I was quite charmed by Betty Gilpin, also known from Mrs. Davis. If you are more into the faster work, then I would leave this American Primeval alone.
Like Vikings, but in the Wild West.
