Fox is renewing Animal Control for a third season before the start of season two

Fox Entertainment has given an early season three to the workplace comedy Animal Control.
The renewal comes a month before the series starring Joel McHale kicks off for its second season on March 6, alongside Family Guy.

Animal Control is the first live-action comedy wholly owned by Fox – and the only current live-action series – giving the company flexibility in renewal decisions.

The comedy, which scored a record streaming debut for Fox, has generated international sales in key English-speaking territories including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, generating revenue for the company. The network's own scripted series also includes the animated comedy Krapopolis.

After seeing the creative direction of season two, including completed episodes, Fox executives felt confident about ordering another season, which will be shot after a hiatus following the end of filming for season two to accommodate schedules to accommodate everyone.

Animal Control is an incredibly irreverent series that expresses everything viewers expect from a Fox comedy,” said Fox Entertainment’s President of Scripted Programming Michael Thorn. “It has an amazing amount of momentum behind it, and we’ve been so impressed by the work Joel, Bob, Rob, Dan, Tad, Jake and the entire cast are delivering for Season Two we wanted to reward them with the opportunity to deliver even more of this special show to fans next season.”

Animal Control was created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling, Tad Quill is the showrunner and the four are responsible for production together with McHale and Jake Fuller.

The series follows a group of local animal shelter workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but people are not. McHale stars as Frank, a quirky, eccentric animal shelter worker who may not have gone to college, but is still the most well-read person in the room. Frank is a former cop who tried to expose corruption in his department, but his efforts got him fired, which may explain why he's so cynical and tight-fisted. He has an almost superhuman ability to understand animals. Folks...not so good.

Michael Rowland, Vella Lovell, Ravi Patel and Grace Palmer also star and Gerry Dee returns. Season two, which kicks off mating season – for both the animals and the agents who protect them – has returning guest stars Ken Jeong (Community), Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) and Krystal Smith (Welcome to Flatch).

The premiere episode of Animal Control was Fox's most-streamed scripted debut and most-streamed comedy episode ever, averaging 5.2 million multiplatform viewers, including 2.6 million on Hulu, up +302% from Live + Same Day.

Animal Control is produced by Fox Entertainment Studios and directed by Fisher, Greenberg, Sterling, Quill, Fuller (Jax Media) and McHale. The series is distributed by Fox Entertainment Global, which has sold the series in the United Kingdom to Channel 4, Foxtel's FOX8 in Australia, CBC and CBC Gem in Canada and TVNZ in New Zealand.
