The series is about a Gloomy Doomy bookkeeper Bernard Black who doesn't really like people. Together with his new age assistant Manny they run a bookshop, often visited by a slightly nice frustrated woman Fran from a shop nearby. Inspired by a lot of alcohol and the wisdom that goes with it, they try to run the shop, especially Manny, with the help of Fran.
