HBO Max Gives Creature Commandos a Second Season

The James Gunn-created animated series is the first installment in the new DC Universe.
HBO Max has renewed its adult animated series Creature Commandos for a second season. The launch comes midway through the seven-episode first season, which premiered on December 5.

The series, created by DC Studios co-chair James Gunn, is the first title to be released in the DC Universe continuity, which will continue when Superman hits theaters next summer. HBO's hit series The Penguin falls under DC Studios' "Elseworlds" banner for series and films that are not part of the primary ongoing series. DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are producing the series, with Dean Lorey (Harley Quinn) serving as showrunner.

“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem,” Gunn and DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran said in a statement. “From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker (2022) to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”

Added Amy Gravitt, vp HBO and Max comedy programming, “Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”

Creature Commandos follows a secret team of imprisoned monsters recruited for missions too dangerous for humans. The first season's voice cast includes Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoe Chao, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma, and Viola Davis, who reprises her role as Amanda Waller from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker (2022).

“Thanks to the brilliant imagination of James and the talent of our amazing artists, DC fans fell in love with this new family of heroes,” said Peter Girardi, executive vp alternative programming at Warner Bros. Animation. “We are excited to continue this wild ride with our partners at Max. You want more monsters, you’re getting more monsters.”

Gunn wrote all seven episodes of Creature Commandos and kept a hand in the show’s production even as he took on his DC Studios role and directed Superman. “Every time I dealt with Creature Commandos, it was like Christmas for me,” he revealed ahead of the series debut. “Taking on a project the size of Superman is just crazy. It’s hard and stressful. But the [Creature Commandos] guys were doing such amazing work, and the cast was so incredible.”
