Second season of HBO's Dune: Prophecy expands cast

Second season of HBO's Dune: Prophecy expands cast

HBO has announced that Indira Varma, Ashley Walters, and Tom Hollander have joined the cast for the second season of the drama series Dune: Prophecy.
Filming for the new season of Dune: Prophecy, which will consist of eight episodes, is currently underway in Hungary, Jordan, and Spain.

Indira Varma

Although HBO has not yet released details about the storyline for season two or the roles of Varma, Walters, and Hollander, many actors from the first season are returning, including Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, Yerin Ha, Barbara Marten, and Tessa Bonham Jones.

The series takes place in the expansive universe of Dune, created by author Frank Herbert, and is set 10,000 years before the rise of Paul Atreides. Dune: Prophecy is inspired by the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, and tells the story of two Harkonnen sisters who fight against forces threatening the future of humanity. Their struggle leads to the founding of the legendary order later known as the Bene Gesserit.

Ashley Walters

The first season of Dune: Prophecy was critically acclaimed and received four Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music, Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program, and Outstanding Special Visual Effects.

Indira Varma is known for her television roles as Niobe in the historical drama series Rome (HBO), Zoe Luther in Luther (BBC), Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones (HBO), and Lady Piety Breakspear in Carnival Row (Prime Video).

Ashley Walters was seen earlier this year as DI Luke Bascombe in the Netflix series Adolescence. Previously, he played and was an executive producer for the crime series Top Boy (Channel 4/Netflix) and had roles in Safe House (ITV), A Thousand Blows (Hulu), and the Harlan Coben series Missing You (Netflix).

Tom Hollander

Tom Hollander received a BAFTA award for his role as Mayor Lance 'Corky' Corkoran in The Night Manager. He has also appeared in Taboo (2017) (BBC), The White Lotus (HBO), Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, and recently as Alfred Hitchcock in Monster: The Ed Gein Story (Netflix).

The cast shared a first look at season two in the video below.

Indira Varma, in my opinion, always adds something positive to everything she's in. Hopefully, her presence, along with that of Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, can counterbalance the unfortunately (too) large role Fimmel has been given. He's simply playing Vikings in Space here.

I completely agree with Rob's previous comment. Indira Varma practically elevates every project she appears in. Her arrival, along with strong names like Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, can hopefully bring more depth and balance to the story. Ashley Walters and Tom Hollander are also interesting additions. Hollander, in particular, has the ability to inject a lot of tension and humanity with subtle nuances, which fits well with the political and religious undercurrent of Dune: Prophecy.

Hopefully, season two will have a slightly different tone. Fimmel certainly had charisma, but his role sometimes felt too much like a Vikings rehash, only with spaceships. With this cast, it seems more likely that the second season will be deeper and more complex.
