A cult favorite supernatural drama is making plans for a movie comeback. Peacock is developing a reboot of the 2011 NBC series Grimm , sources say. Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman is writing the new version, which he'll produce with the original series' creative team, co-creators/executive producers and showrunners David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner's Hazy Mills Productions, and Universal Television.
The exact premise of the Grimm film is being kept under wraps. It is believed that the film will have ties to the series for diehard fans, but it could also be easily accessible to new viewers unfamiliar with the original mythology, as it introduces new mythology and characters. If successful, the sequel could launch a franchise.
The original series followed Portland Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), who discovers that he is a Grimm, the latest in a line of protectors sworn to maintain the balance between humanity and mythological creatures.
Grimm, an under-the-radar series that aired on the less popular Friday night, became a breakthrough during the 2011-2012 season. The series ran for six seasons on NBC, remained one of the most-watched scripted series on Fridays, and also performed well internationally for NBCUniversal.
A year after Grimm ended, NBC attempted to develop a spinoff with a female Grimm at its center, from writer Melissa Glenn, Hazy Mills, and Universal TV, with Greenwalt and Kouf serving as consulting producers.
Berman came aboard Grimm after a 15-year stint at Sony Pictures TV where he created the successful drama series Drop Dead Diva, which aired for six seasons on Lifetime.
I'm very curious to see what they'll make of this.
