Since the release of season four, Hacks has been in the top five most-watched series on HBO Max in the US and in the top ten worldwide. The international appeal of the series has visibly grown with each season.
The series is led by Jean Smart as stand-up legend Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder as her millennial writer Ava Daniels. The creative minds behind the series are Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky – who act as showrunners in addition to writing. Downs herself also stars, as do Megan Stalter as Kayla, Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Marcus, Mark Indelicato, Rose Abdoo, Dan Bucatinsky, Helen Hunt and newcomers to season four: Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins, Eric Balfour, Aristotle Athari, and others.
Universal TV president Erin Underhill said in a statement: “Like Deborah Vance herself, Hacks only gets bolder, sharper and more iconic with time.”
The series is praised worldwide for its unparalleled balance between biting satire and genuine emotional depth. Jean Smart's performance remains an absolute anchor and was once again showered with praise by critics.
Kayla and Jimmy got way too much screen time this season. But then again, Jimmy is played by the producer and he has stepped up his game.
I will of course check out season 5, because S4 ends on a cliffhanger, but I really hope they go back more to the humor of the first seasons.
