Apple TV announces start date for Hijack season two with released teaser

Apple TV has announced when the thriller series Hijack, starring Idris Elba, will return for a second season.
Idris Elba returns as Sam Nelson, the experienced negotiator who tried to save a hijacked plane in the first season of Hijack. This time, the story is set underground in Germany.

Hijack

According to the official summary, a Berlin subway line with passengers is taken hostage, while authorities do everything they can to save hundreds of lives. Sam finds himself in the midst of the crisis once again, where one wrong decision can have fatal consequences.

After the success of the first season, which debuted in the summer of 2023 and was initially presented as a limited series, Apple decided to renew it at the beginning of last year.

In addition to Elba, Christine Adams, Max Beesley, and Archie Panjabi are also returning to their roles. New cast members for this season include Christian Näthe, Clare-Hope Ashitey, Lisa Vicari, Toby Jones, Karima McAdams, and Christiane Paul.

Executive producer Jim Field Smith hinted in an interview with TV Insider that he was always curious about how Sam Nelson would react in other crisis situations — something that is extensively explored in this new season.

According to the British newspaper The Sun, the second season is partially inspired by the Speed films from the nineties. An insider reported that the producers have taken the concept of the first film — a group of passengers taken hostage under the threat of an explosive — and moved it to a new environment, similar to how Speed 2: Cruise Control moved the original story from a bus to a cruise ship.

The second season of Hijack can be seen on Apple TV starting Wednesday, January 14, 2026. The first two episodes will be released that day, followed by weekly new episodes until the season finale on February 25.

The first season of Hijack felt rather complete. Sam Nelson's story had a satisfying ending and didn't demand a sequel. That Apple is now repeating the same formula, but from the air to the underground, feels a bit forced. Idris Elba remains a strong suit, of course, and a hostage situation in the Berlin subway sounds exciting, but there's a significant risk that this second season will feel more like a rehash.

Idris Elba is a very talented actor. Without a doubt. However, I found the first season rather weak, especially the story. It can only get better. Let's hope so.
