With a cast including Paz Vega (The OA), Rosalind Elbay (Ramy), and Tati Gabrielle (You), the series will explore not only the planning and aftermath of the robbery, but also the relationships between the various characters.
Netflix recently unveiled the trailer for Kaleidoscope which features a hardened Giancarlo Esposito (pictured) in his role as Leo Pap. With Esposito's recent appearances on The Boys, Better Call Saul, and The Mandalorian, his massive stardom will be crucial to bringing Netflix's ambitious new project to market. The trailer positions him as the architect of the heist while also introducing Roger Salas, played by Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle), as his adversary and target. The trailer hints that Salas betrayed Pap in the past, which could add dimension to the conflict that runs through the series and potentially make it a revenge thriller. It remains to be seen whether the order in which the viewer watches the series can affect the type of story being told.
Kaleidoscope is sure to hit the screens in style, with the trailer showcasing explosions, action and drama galore. The unprecedented structure incorporates an element of interaction with the viewer throughout the story, similar to the 2018 Netflix movie Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, in which the viewer was able to make story-based decisions at different times, allowing for different plot directions and endings. The special had a mixed reception, with the novelty of the interactive storyline wearing off relatively quickly; the upcoming season of Black Mirror seems to have no plans for such a project. The ability to shuffle Kaleidoscope will certainly generate some word of mouth, but time will tell if the premise is intriguing enough to hook viewers.
