There are not very many Icelandic series (I only know The Cliff / Hamarinn), but so far they all seem to have a certain mystery. This also applies to Katla, named after a real volcano. What else they have in common is that they are set in the beautiful desolate landscape of Iceland. In the case of Katla it is gloomy, gray and dark, partly caused by the enormous ash emissions from the Katla, which has been erupting for a year. This contributes enormously to the atmosphere of this series. In the first episode, a mysterious woman is found near the glacier on the volcano, naked and completely covered in a thick layer of ash. She claims to be Swedish who works in the local hotel. But it soon turns out that this was a long time ago and there is a woman with the same name and appearance living in Sweden. Only 20 years older. Anyway, even more ash-covered figures with surprising identities emerge and the mystery only increases. After the first two episodes I gave the series a solid eight. But unfortunately I gradually adjusted that down a bit. There are just some far-fetched plot twists and how everything is ultimately explained is a bit too easy in my opinion. How the residents react to what is happening is also very hypocritical. That may be an Icelandic character trait, but if you see someone you wouldn't expect at all, I think you would react differently. In the end, the mystery was big enough to see through to the end, but there could have been something more to it.
