New Luther Film in Development for Netflix

New Luther Film in Development for Netflix

Idris Elba will reprise his role as detective John Luther in a new film sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023) for Netflix.
Also, Dermot Crowley and Ruth Wilson are returning in their respective roles from Luther. Crowley will once again portray DSU Martin Schenk, while Wilson returns as the intriguing Alice Morgan.

Luther

Schenk already appeared in The Fallen Sun, but Morgan was absent in that. The film is directed by Jamie Payne, who previously directed both The Fallen Sun and episodes of the original BBC series Luther. The script is once again penned by creator Neil Cross.

In the new film, London is shaken by a series of brutal and random murders, which secretly calls Luther back into active duty — but this time, the situation is even more dangerous, as everyone seems to want to eliminate Luther.

In The Fallen Sun, we saw the disgraced detective escape from prison to stop a ruthless serial killer terrorizing the city. Cynthia Erivo played Odette Raine, and Andy Serkis portrayed the psychopathic killer David Robey.

The original television series Luther started in 2010 and ran for five seasons. Elba’s titular character, a brilliant but tormented detective, dealt with the complex Alice Morgan, played by Wilson — a former researcher with murderous tendencies who appeared in three of the five seasons. Crowley’s Schenk began as an adversary within the force but gradually developed a working relationship with Luther, secretly helping him from within the police.

Filming for the new movie is expected to commence in February 2026.

Idris Elba is always good, of course, and he made Luther what it is today. But the really good news in this article is that Ruth Wilson is also returning as Alice Morgan. While the previous film wasn't bad at all, Alice was sorely missed. Bring it on!

Luther: The Fallen Sun unfortunately doesn't live up to the original series. It sometimes feels as if a TV series has been forcibly adapted into a movie, making certain storylines feel rushed and lacking the depth that made the series so special. The plot is also disappointing: it's overstuffed, implausible, and contains scenes that feel more exaggerated than exciting. Consequently, the film loses the tension, realism, and intensity that Luther once captured so well.

Hopefully, the new film will better strike the balance between suspense, character depth, and believability, so that Luther can feel like he did in his best days again: raw, clever, and compelling.
