Matlock (2024) - First episode
Matlock (2024) with Kathy Bates is the best reboot of a classic series in years. Sunday, September 22, 2024 marked the return of the famous court lawyer Matlock (2024) to American television. The old distinguished gray man Ben Matlock has been replaced in this reboot by a retired lawyer Madeline 'Matty' Matlock (Kathy Bates, Harry's Law). With her friendly attitude, pleasant appearance and knowledge of files, she knows how to talk her way into the Jacobson Moore law firm.
Olympia is immediately impressed by Matty, but is deep in her divorce from Julian Monroe (Jason Ritter, Parenthood). There is a nice role for veteran Beau Bridges (Masters of Sex) as a senior (Julian Monroe's father), which makes relations within Jacobson Moore somewhat tense. Fortunately, there is room for humor and the episode ends with a nice revelation.
First of all, the first episode works particularly well because of the strong role of lead actress Kathy Bates. She is convincing as the sharp-witted Matty, who is easily underestimated by her legal colleagues. Secondly, the pace remains nice and high and the story offers enough energy and surprise to keep you interested. A great start to this new version of the television classic Matlock that was shown between 1985 and 1996.

Over the course of this first episode, there are many surprising developments and twists in the story. That makes this pilot episode a very pleasant 45 minutes of television. Matty cleverly wins over first lawyer Olympia (Skye P. Marshall, Good Sam) and then slowly her supporting lawyers Sarah Yang (Leah Lewis, Nancy Drew) and Billy Martinez (David del Rio, The Troop) with her perceptiveness and disarming directness .Over the course of this first episode, there are many surprising developments and twists in the story.
