Molly Shannon will star opposite her former Saturday Night Live colleague Will Ferrell in an upcoming Netflix comedy series about golf. The as-yet-untitled golf comedy series starring Will Ferrell, originally announced in May 2024, has undergone significant changes since then. The ten-episode series marks Ferrell's first starring role in a comedy series.
Ferrell plays Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins, a fictional golf legend. Molly Shannon (pictured) plays his foul-mouthed ex-wife, Stacy, a role for which casting only began after the creative team was reassembled.
The series was originally co-developed by Ramy Youssef, who worked on the project with Josh Rabinowitz and Andy Campagna of Youssef's production company, Cairo Cowboy. However, in 2023, Youssef and his team left the production due to creative differences.
A new creative team was then assembled, consisting of Chris Henchy, Ferrell's frequent collaborator; Harper Steele, known for Ferrell's Netflix documentary Will & Harper; David Gordon Green, director of Pineapple Express; and Andrew Guest, known for his work on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community.
Shannon and Ferrell belonged to the same generation of Saturday Night Live stars: she was active from 1995 to 2001, and he from 1996 to 2002. They appeared together in countless iconic sketches, including the absurd sketch "Dog Show." They also co-starred in the film "Superstar," in which Shannon revived her popular SNL character, Mary Katherine Gallagher, with Ferrell in a key supporting role.
Molly Shannon appeared in the fourth season of Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building," for which she and the cast won a SAG Award for Best Comedy Ensemble.
