Spotlight on: Ruth Wilson

Spotlight on: Ruth Wilson

Lights off, spotlight on! Time to see in which series this actress portrayed a character.
It is 2006 when the audience gets to meet British actress Ruth Wilson. At the time, the actress portrays the titular character in the adaptation of Jane Eyre (2006). The four-part British miniseries is based on the book with the same name, which released back in 1847. The book is one of the more well-known written pieces in world literature. In the story, Jane Eyre falls in love with her employer, Edward Rochester (Toby Stephens, Black Sails), even though she is working for him as a governess. This just screams drama!

At the same time, Wilson is part of a completely different series, Suburban Shootout. This surrealistic dramedy follows a struggle between two gangs of housewives who start shooting each other during a shooting lesson. This 'special' series manages to stay alive for two entire seasons.

Wilson and miniseries seem to go hand in hand. After Jane Eyre, she is part of Agatha Christie's Marple in 2007. In 2008, a small role in The Freezing follows. After that, she returns for another miniseries in 2009. Firstly, Wilson is part of The Prisoner, a series about a secret agent who is kidnapped and stumbles onto a sinister conspiracy. Even though The Prisoner isn't all that spectacular, Wilson is part of a stellar cast that includes Ian McKellen, Lennie James, Rachel Blake and Jam Caviezel.

In 2009, Wilson is also part of a miniseries called Small Island. She portrays Queenie in this adaptation of Andrea Levy's prize-winning story about Jamaicans and Londoners who were involved in the second World War.

Her biggest hit so far follows, Luther. As an antagonist and antihero, she is a favourite amongst the fans. She is a tower of strength to the tormented main character, Luther (Idris Elba, Turn Up Charlie). Even though she isn't part of all the episodes, her character is invaluable to the British BBC series.

Once Luther is being recorded, Wilson is very busy. She moves her working area to the big screen. She acquires roles in The Lone Ranger and Saving Mr. Banks. In 2014, she returns to the small screen with a role in the American The Affair.

The Affair revolves around Noah Solloway, a teacher and writer from New York, and Alison Bailey, a young waitress. Both are struggling with the issues of life. A drama unfolds once they meet each other in Montauk. The Showtime drama series had a total of five seasons and a solid ending. Unfortunately, Wilson only had a small role.

In 2018, Wilson returns to the United Kingdom. This time it's for a mystery series called Mrs Wilson. No, she's not portraying herself. Her Alison Wilson ends up in a dark place after the death of her husband. He had hidden away lots of disturbing secrets.

In late 2019 a new series comes out that shows Wilson at her best, His Dark Materials. This is also an adaptation of a book, one which we know better as the The Golden Compass trilogy. Wilson portrays Ms. Coulter, one of the colourful characters whom Lyra Belacqua stumbles across.

Recently, the third and final season of His Dark Materials was announced. This will enable us to see the powerful portrayal of Ms. Coulter by Wilson one last time. What comes next, isn't all that clear. Right now, three of her projects are in post-production. These will likely be finished, which means that we will eventually be able to see Wilson in the movies True Things About Me, Oslo and The Book of Ruth. Plenty to look forward to!

This was my nomination for best actress this year. Unfortunately she did not make the short list. I got to know her as Alice in Luther in which she even shadowed Idris Elba from time to time. What a performance. And she is the main reason for me to keep following His Dark Materials. Here too she plays someone you love to hate. Nice article. I still see some things that I don't know, although not everything in which she plays a role is to my taste. But I will probably try a few.
