Series of the Year 2021 - Best Comedy/Dramedy Series

Series of the Year 2021 - Best Comedy/Dramedy Series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2021 and discusses the comedy/dramedy category. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Wednesday 5 January and Sunday 6 February.
There we go! It's my honour to kick off with the first column of The Series of the Year Election 2021. In the last couple of years, this category focused purely on comedy. But we noticed that quite a few series that were nominated, or even won, often contained a hint of drama, which only strengthens some comedies, in my opinion. That's why we've decided to change this category to also include dramedies.

Comedy and drama are my favourite genres. I particularly like the combination. So this is the perfect category for me. And trust me, I've enjoyed a lot of good comedy-drama's the last year. I enjoy watching shows that have a lighter tone, are easy to laugh along with and just make me forget all the seriousness that is going on in the world.

With your input, the readers of MySeries and the writing team I've compiled a list of ten comedy/dramedy series. You can cast your vote starting from the 5th of January. Naturally, if you don't see a series that you think should be here, you can decide to use a wildcard and vote on a completely different series. Proudly, I present, in alphabetical order, the nominations in the comedy/dramedy genre:

All Creatures Great and Small (2020)
Atypical
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Kevin Can F*** Himself
The Kominsky Method
Sex Education
Shameless (US)
Superstore
Ted Lasso
What We Do in the Shadows

All Creatures Great and Small (2020)

The British dramedy All Creatures Great and Small (2020) from Channel 5 is a reboot of both the book with the same name as the original series from 1987. Despite the success of the first series, this particular series isn't bad at all. The story revolves around a young veterinarian who moves to a small English town and ends up working in the local veterinary practice. It has fun storylines, beautiful nature and good acting. The members of MySeries describe this series as an 'unusual sympathetic series that is easy on the eyes.' The series already has two seasons, but it is the first time it is nominated for a Series of the Year election. I can't wait to see how this series does.

Atypical

This American Netflix series has been immensely popular since its premiere in 2017. But unfortunately, with the fourth season, the series has ended. Atypical revolves around a boy with autism who is looking for self-awareness, love and independence. An original, comical, loving and touching story. As far as I'm concerned, this series has been finished at its peak, which is something that can't be said about every series. Will Atypical get a nice goodbye by ending high on this list? We'll see.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

The immensely popular series Brooklyn Nine-Nine didn't seem to end. But last year, the final episode aired. As far as I was concerned, B99 could've lasted for a lot longer. I can't get enough of the witty humour, clever puns and Titles of Amy's Sex Tapes. Luckily, the series ended in a lovely way. Jake Peralta and the rest of the 9-9, I'm going to miss you!

Kevin Can F*** Himself

If there's one series that is truly a mixture of comedy and drama, then it's Kevin Can F*** Himself. The series is half a sitcom (situational comedy) and half a drama. It revolves around an apparent standard sitcom-housewive and her husband. But behind closed doors, you'll see the drama. What does life look like in the eyes of a sitcom woman? As soon as she leaves the living room, you'll leave the sitcom studio and take a step into her world. A world that is a lot less pretty than what people in the audience get to see. Just because of this original setting, I do hope that this series ends up in a high spot in this election.

The Kominsky Method

A comedy/drama series with Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. Can be seen on Netflix and ended with its third season last year. It revolves around the formerly famous actor Sandy Kominsky. He is teaching acting to youth with big acting ambitions in Hollywood. Sneakily, he actually hopes to acquire one last big role. As the direction was in the hands of Chuck Lorre, the humour can be compared to that of Two and a Half Men. The Kominsky Method was nominated for six Emmy's during the last Emmy Awards. It has also won two Golden Globes. What could that mean for this election? We'll see.

Sex Education

A big contender, because who hasn't seen this? It is a wonderful 'woke' series that is very easy to binge. The story revolves around a group of pubescent teens in high school who are trying to figure out their own sexuality. I don't believe any series has been this open about sex before. It is recognizable, inspiring, educative, uncomfortable, hilarious and also touching. And to top it all off, it has an amazing cast as well. Sex Education is a recommendation for both young and old.

Shameless (US)

If you truly want to have a laugh, and maybe a bit of a cry, Shameless (US) is the series for you. It revolves around the Gallagher family. It's a dysfunctional and crazy family. Six children, they all have about 100 problems. These children and their alcohol and drug-addicted father are trying to find their way in the slums of Chicago. If you can think of it, it'll be in Shameless (US). The series is uninhibited, crazy and of course: shameless. For eleven seasons, the Gallaghers have shown us that our families aren't all that bad. But now it's done, and I'm going to miss them. I hope this series ends up in a high spot, the Gallaghers would deserve it!

Superstore

This series also saw its final season last year. The employees of the megastore have managed to hold on for a total of six seasons. This is also a series that keeps improving with every season. Superstore discusses a lot of - American - topics. Such as the presidency of Trump, de #metoo and the Black Lives Matter movements and let's not forget the current pandemic. The amazing thing is that this series manages to discuss the topics in a serious manner, but also manages to keep them light and simple. Try and do that yourself!

Ted Lasso

An American football coach moves to the UK to coach a professional football team. A simple plot. But with brilliant actors, wonderful humour, fantastic characters and an amazing Jason Sudeikis. Ted Lasso makes you happy, truly happy. And listen to this: Ted Lasso has won 46 awards and was nominated 69 times in 2021. This includes the Emmy Awards, the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Television Awards. And honestly, it is WELL DESERVED!

What We Do in the Shadows

The mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows revolves around the lives of a group of vampires, who are all living together in an old mansion. Alongside their human protector, they worry about the household, paying bills, organizing orgies and all those kinds of civil things. This results in a lot of irritations, just like with normal people. The humour has to suit you, as it's very dry. Sometimes, I just can't stop laughing as the series can be too ridiculous. Is this humour the kind of humour of the readers of MySeries? We'll find out!

These were all ten nominees. A lot of series in this category ended in the last year. I am truly going to miss them. One good thing! Next year, there is going to be plenty of room for new series. I wish you all good fun with voting and I can't wait for the result. I hope that you do that as well!
