Together with the loyal readers and other writers of MijnSerie, I have compiled a list of nominees. Each of these series offers something special, from stunning animation to unique stories. Which title ultimately wins is entirely up to you. One thing is for sure: it was once again a year full of great animated series!
Below, in alphabetical order, are the top ten nominees for the best series of 2024:
Arcane

Arcane, the series produced by Riot Games and Fortiche Production, has once again made it onto the list of best animated series of 2024. After a highly acclaimed first season and an even better second season, this steampunk action series continues to draw more people into this captivating genre. The unique animation style and the popularity of League of Legends help this series become a true success. In short, Arcane certainly deserves a spot on the list of nominees.

Batman: Caped Crusader

Batman: Caped Crusader gives the iconic world of DC Comics a fresh, noir-like twist. The series is set in an alternate 1940s and introduces compelling villains that are slightly different from what we are used to. This offers a fresh perspective on the well-known superhero. With an animation style strongly reminiscent of the successful Batman: The Animated Series from the 1990s and action scenes that highlight Batman’s skills, this series certainly deserves a spot on the list of nominees.

Blood of Zeus

With the second season of Blood of Zeus, we are once again immersed in a world full of Greek mythology. The series impresses this year with strong antagonists and animation that perfectly showcases the vibrant depictions and rich mythological setting. The dialogue, filled with philosophical undertones and beautifully brought to life by the powerful voices of experienced voice actors, makes Blood of Zeus a deserving nominee for this list.

Delicious in Dungeon

Delicious in Dungeon, also known as Danjon Meshi or Dungeon Meshi, was a pleasant surprise for me. This series, based on the Japanese manga by Ryouko Kui, masterfully combines humor, adventure, and cooking. The story follows a classic D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) party– a human, an elf, a halfling, and a dwarf – as they prepare the most unique dishes from whatever they encounter along the way. From monster parts to wall ivy, no ingredient is too strange. This series deserves a spot on the list, if only for the creativity of its dishes.

Invincible

Invincible has been nominated for Best Animated Series of the Year for the third time, after previous nominations in 2021 and 2023. Despite having only four episodes this year, the series continues to impress with its satirical take on superhero genre, intense violence, and unique comic-like style. The iconic voice cast, including J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, and Gillian Jacobs, brings the emotional and powerful moments of the series to life, which is always a positive for a show. In short, Invincible deserves a spot among the nominees.

Marvel’s What If…?

Marvel’s What If…? makes its comeback and once again earns a spot on the list of nominees. After a successful start in 2021, the series returns with brand new characters (somewhat) and intriguing stories that further explore the Marvel multiverse. While season two doesn’t quite match the level of the first season, it remains an entertaining and creative series worth watching. The third season, which aired in 2023, was outside the running at the time, but now truly deserves its place among the nominees.

Terminator Zero

Although Terminator Zero is still high on my 'to-watch list,' I’ve already heard some interesting things about it. Released on August 29, 2024, coinciding with Judgment Day in the Terminator universe, the anime introduces us to a new cast of survivors in Japan. While the characters could have been more developed, the unique take on the familiar Terminator genre makes this anime a valuable addition to the franchise. It’s definitely a good addition to the list of best animated series of the year.

The Dragon Prince

For the third consecutive year, The Dragon Prince has earned a place on the list of nominees, and for good reason. The captivating story, which was enriched this summer with season six and will continue with season seven, keeps fans on the edge of their seats. With beautiful animation, a detailed world, and nuanced characters, the series remains a highlight in the genre. With this nomination, The Dragon Prince proves once again that it is one of the most immersive animated series of our time.

The Legend of Vox Machina

After several years of just missing out on the list, The Legend of Vox Machina has finally earned a spot on the list of nominated animated series. The series, created by Critical Role (originally a YouTube channel centered around D&D campaigns), seamlessly adapts the Chroma Conclave Arc (one of their campaigns) into a highly entertaining series full of humor, mystery, and plenty of action that fits perfectly with a classic D&D story. And with voice work from several well-known voice actors from the world of video games and series, The Legend of Vox Machina truly deserves a place on the list of nominees.

X-Men ‘97

X-Men ’97 was a pleasant surprise this year. As the successor to X-Men: The Animated Series, the series manages to combine the nostalgic animation style of the 1990s with a fresh, modern approach that meets today’s standards. With some more mature themes here and there, it feels like the series has grown with the original audience, while staying true to the essence of the X-Men. In short, a strong continuation of an animated classic that absolutely deserves a place on the list of nominees.
